Tipping Guide: San Francisco / Bay Area

Levi’s Stadium (FIFA: San Francisco Bay Area Stadium) • 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup

Quick Answer

Tip 18–20% at restaurants, 15–20% for rides, and $3–5 per night for housekeeping.

City Overview

San Francisco is a compact, hilly city famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, tech industry, and incredible food diversity. However, Levi’s Stadium is actually located in Santa Clara, about 45 miles south of San Francisco in the heart of Silicon Valley.

The Bay Area has standard US tipping norms, but it’s one of the most expensive metro areas in the country. Restaurant prices are high, and 18–20% tips on top of already-expensive meals can add up. Budget accordingly. Like Seattle, San Francisco mandates a health surcharge (often called “SF Mandate”) that is NOT a tip.
