What's different here
- •Texas pays tipped staff the federal $2.13 an hour in cash — tips are most of a server's take-home pay here, exactly as in Dallas and Houston.
- •Austin runs on two annual surges: SXSW in March and the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in late October (22–25 October in 2026). During both, downtown demand — and rideshare surge pricing — spikes hard; conventions don't change, but cash queues do.
- •Counter culture is the default here. Between food trucks, barbecue lines and coffee bars, much of what you eat in Austin carries no tipping obligation at all — the full 18–20% applies where someone waits on your table.
